Passage from Reflective Journal 2
15 March, 2011

I have come to love their students because although there are many behavioral issues in the class, most of the students are interested in learning and participating in activities. One student I have been working with, Ricardo, is an English-language learner. For a third grader he is performing severely below grade level academically and needs extra help in reading. On Mondays and Thursdays while I am there, Ricardo and I work together during literacy. Something that is challenging for me is to watch and listen to Ricardo struggle with reading. During my observation with Bill Shorr Ricardo was having a difficult time reading the stories and passages he was working on. He was making many mistakes reading even when he tried to read sight words. Being a student teacher with little experience, I was unsure of what words to correct him on and which ones to let him make mistakes on. I believe that it is hard for him to read words because the vowel sounds in Spanish are pronounced differently in English.
Before Spring break while I was working with Ricardo, I asked him if he speaks Spanish at home and he said yes. I then asked him if he spoke it all the time or if he speaks English at home also, and he said that he usually only speaks Spanish. I think that it is great that his family speaks Spanish in their home, because like his family, my mother’s family spoke a different language, Greek, while my mother was growing up. If anything, I think it helps to know two languages instead of just one. Michelle makes sure that Ricardo sees different specialists to help him improve his literacy. I think that if the intervention continues Ricardo will improve greatly by the end of this school year.
